CCBA Eligibility Requirements Explained

The Certification of Capability in Business Analysis is an experience-based credential. Unlike an entry-level certification, CCBA requires candidates to document qualifying business analysis work before they can sit for the exam.

Eligibility is based on the amount, recency, and BABOK alignment of your work, together with professional development, references, and acceptance of IIBA certification policies.

CCBA candidates must document at least 3,750 hours of business analysis work completed within the seven years before submitting the application.

The hours must represent actual business analysis work aligned with the BABOK Guide. A job title alone does not establish eligibility, and a candidate does not need to have held the formal title of Business Analyst if the documented responsibilities qualify.

The application should describe what you did, how the activity aligned with BABOK knowledge areas, and how many qualifying hours were completed.

CCBA does not require candidates to purchase one specific training course, but the application does require 21 qualifying professional development hours.

A course must satisfy the applicable learning, facilitation, interaction, assessment, and BABOK-alignment criteria to count. Candidates should confirm that a course qualifies before relying on it in the application.

The CCBA application requires two professional references who can validate the candidate's professional background or submitted work.

References must have known the applicant for at least six months. Acceptable reference categories can include a career manager, an internal or external client, or a qualified CCBA or CBAP credential holder.

An audit does not mean that an application is incorrect. It is a verification process, and candidates are responsible for providing any requested supporting information within the applicable timeframe.

Meeting the application criteria confirms that you may proceed through the certification process. It does not automatically mean that you are prepared for the scenario-based exam.

Exam readiness requires familiarity with all six knowledge areas, the ability to interpret applied scenarios, controlled pacing, and consistent performance during timed practice.

Most eligibility problems come from inaccurate hour calculations, weak knowledge-area mapping, unsuitable professional development, or references who do not meet the stated conditions.

Review every requirement before submission rather than assuming that years in a business-related role automatically satisfy the application.
